St. Ann’s High School in Vijayanagar Colony, Hyderabad, is where Tabu attended school.

In 1983, she relocated to Bombay where she spent two years studying at St. Xavier’s College. She is the younger sister of actress Farah and the niece of Shabana Azmi, Tanvi Azmi, and Baba Azmi. She is reluctant to speak publicly about her personal life.

Early Career:

When she was younger, Tabu made an uncredited appearance in Bazaar (1982), and when she was 14 she played Dev Anand’s daughter in Hum Naujawan (1985). She co-starred with Venkatesh in the Telugu film Coolie No. 1 (1991), which was her first acting role. Producer Boney Kapoor released Prem and Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja in December 1987, respectively. Tabu was cast in Prem opposite Boney’s younger brother Sanjay Kapoor.

The film took eight years to produce, yet it ended up being Boney Kapoor’s biggest failure.

Pehla Pehla Pyar in the year 1994, Tabu’s debut film in Hindi as a leading heroine, failed to garner any attention. She became well-known for her appearance opposite Ajay Devgan in Vijaypath (1994), for which she won Best Female Debut at the Filmfare awards. Other unsuccessful movies followed, although during this time she was in the box office hit Haqeeqat (1995).

A career at  peaks:

Tabu had 8 releases in 1996. Saajan Chale Sasural and Jeet, are two movies that did well at the box office and were among the top 5 movies of that year. Maachis, another big film of hers, received favorable reviews.

She has won her first National Film Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of a Punjabi woman caught up in the rise of the Sikh rebellion. Her major blockbuster pictures in the South were released the same year. She co-starred with Nagarjuna in the critically acclaimed Telugu movie Ninne Pelladatha, which took home the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. She was “breathtakingly sensuous” in the role, according to Anupama Chopra. Priyadarshan’s highly acclaimed Malayalam epic period drama Kalapani garnered her performance awards from all over South India. Also, she made her Kollywood debut in Kathir’s hugely popular Tamil film Kadhal Desam.

She appeared in two popular multi-starrers in 1999: Biwi No. 1 and Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand Together, which went on to earn the most money and the second-most money, respectively, during the year. Hu Tu Tu garnered favorable reviews from critics, earning her another Filmfare Best Actress award (Critics).

Second Innings:

She returned to Telugu cinema in 2020 with the Telugu film Ala Vaikunta Puram loo, a Trivikram Srinivas and Allu Arjun production.

She also acted in the family comedy Jawaani Jaaneman (2020), which again starred Saif Ali Khan, with whom she last appeared on screen in 1990.

She “shines,” according to critics, in the minor role.

She won praise from critics in 2022 for playing two characters in Anees Bazmee’s horror comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, which had the highest opening weekend among Hindi movies.

According to critics, Tabu “stole the show.” She appeared in the Abhishek Pathak-directed sequel to Drishyam that same year, titled Drishyam 2. It became the most successful film of her career and a big critical and financial triumph.

In Kuttey from 2023, Tabu made her acting debut as a police officer.

The following films featuring Tabu and Ajay Devgan are Bholaa and Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha. Khufiya will also include her. The Crew, a movie with Kareena Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, is another project Tabu has in the works.
