Naval Tata was adopted by Ratanji Tata, who is the younger son of Jamshedji Tata. His parents parted their ways when he was ten years old. Their grandmother, Navajbai Tata, raised him and his half brother ,Noel Tata.

Ratan Tata attended Campion School in Bombay up until the eighth grade. Then, he moved  on to Cathedral and John Connon Schools in Bombay and Bishop Cotton School in Shimla for more academic pursuits. After completing his school, in 1995, he got his diploma from Riverdale Country School in New York City. He studies for four years in Cornell University and graduated with a bachelor’s in architecture. To support his family financialIy, he got enrolled in the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1975.

To study the causes of the most prevailing older people’s Alzheimer’s disease, the Centre for Neuroscience situated at the Indian Institute of Science received a grant of $750 million from the Tata Trusts, headed by Ratan Tata. On a total, the Tata has donated $102 billion over the period of 100 years.
